Disability grant checker
Answer a few questions and see whether you are likely to qualify for the SASSA disability grant and what it pays. This is guidance only: SASSA makes the final decision after a medical assessment. No signup, nothing leaves this page.
How this works
The SASSA disability grant supports adults aged 18 to 59 whose disability stops them working for six months or longer. A doctor appointed by SASSA must assess you, using a report not older than three months when you apply. A condition lasting six months to a year gets a temporary grant; longer than a year gets a permanent grant, which SASSA still reviews from time to time.
SASSA also applies a means test to your income and assets. From April 2026 the reported limits are R9 350 income a month and R1 584 000 in assets for a single person, doubled if you are married, because a married couple's means are counted together. Income near the limit can reduce the grant on a sliding scale rather than remove it entirely. SASSA has not published these limits on its website; confirm them at your local office.
Applying is free at any SASSA office. Bring your ID, proof of income and assets, the medical report, and bank details. If you cannot go yourself, someone can apply for you with a doctor's letter and a power of attorney.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the SASSA disability grant in 2026?
R2 400 a month from 1 April 2026, the same as the older persons grant. The amount usually increases every April, with a smaller top up some years in October.
What conditions qualify for a disability grant in South Africa?
There is no fixed list. What matters is whether a SASSA appointed doctor confirms your physical or mental condition prevents you from working for at least six months. Chronic illness, injury and psychiatric conditions can all qualify if they stop you working.
Can I get a disability grant if I have a job or other income?
Possibly. The means test looks at how much you earn, not just whether you work. From April 2026 the reported limit is R9 350 a month for a single person, counted together with your spouse if married, and income below the limit can still reduce the grant on a sliding scale.
How long does a SASSA disability grant application take?
SASSA aims to process applications within 90 days, and pays from the date you applied if approved. Ask for a receipt when you apply; it is your proof of the application date.
What is the difference between a temporary and permanent disability grant?
A temporary grant is for a disability lasting six months to a year and stops automatically unless you reapply. A permanent grant is for conditions lasting longer than a year, though SASSA can still call you back for review. The monthly amount is the same.
What can I do if SASSA rejects my disability grant application?
Ask SASSA for written reasons, then appeal to the Independent Tribunal via the Department of Social Development within 90 days. Many rejections on medical grounds are overturned when a fuller medical report is provided.
