Import and export codes
To clear goods through SA customs in your own name you need a SARS customs client code. We prepare the application, handle the SARS back and forth, and walk it through to approval. Answer two questions to see which codes you need.
What is included
- SARS customs client code application (importer, exporter or both)
- RLA (Registration, Licensing and Accreditation) submission on eFiling
- Supporting document pack prepared: proofs, resolutions, IDs
- The SARS query cycle handled for you until the code is issued
- Your customs code confirmation letter for clearing agents
- A first shipment cheat sheet: clearing agents, tariff codes, VAT on imports
How ordering works
- Email us with the button below. You get our written questionnaire back the same business day.
- Answer in writing at your own pace. No calls, no meetings, everything on record.
- We prepare and submit the RLA application from your questionnaire and handle SARS queries; SARS typically issues codes in five to fifteen business days once documents are in order.
- Pay the fixed price on delivery by EFT. The price you see is the price you pay (SARS charges no government fee for customs registration).
Frequently asked questions
How do I get an import permit in South Africa?
Most goods only need the SARS customs importer code, which this service covers. Some categories (used goods, certain foods, medicines) also need an ITAC import permit; we tell you during the questionnaire if your goods fall in one and what that extra step involves.
How much does an import export licence cost in South Africa?
SARS charges nothing for the customs client code; our fixed R1 490 covers preparing the application properly and handling SARS queries to approval. Watch out for sites charging thousands for "licences" that are just this free registration.
How long does a SARS customs code take?
Typically five to fifteen business days after a complete application. Incomplete supporting documents are the main cause of long delays, which is exactly the part we control for you.
Can I import once off without a customs code?
Individuals can clear limited once off shipments using their ID with SARS conditions, and low value courier imports are cleared by the courier. Anything commercial or repeated needs your own code; clearing agents will insist on it.
Do I need to be VAT registered to import?
No, but you pay import VAT either way and can only claim it back if you are VAT registered. Regular importers usually register for VAT voluntarily once volumes justify it.
SARS customs registration itself carries no government fee (checked August 2026); ITAC permits, where applicable to your goods, are a separate process. Free tools are estimates. Packs are templates and guidance, not legal or financial advice.
